| What can I do about pollution? |
Q. What does TOOFAR stand for?
A. TOOFAR originally began because SWFWMD had taken the dam out of the Withlacoochee River, draining our lakes and canals. SWFWMD has basin boards whose members are appointed, not elected. These people were spending our taxes with no accountability to taxpayers. TOOFAR stands for Taxpayers Outraged Organization For Accountable Representation. We wanted to have a voice in what decisions were being made about our water. We have since become a less political group and now work together with many other organizations to accomplish our goals. Q. When is the next meeting?
A. Meetings are the 4th Thursday of each month except for November & December when they are moved up to the third Thursday because of the holidays. |

Q. Where are the harvesters?
A. Call Citrus County Division of Aquatic Services 527-7620 |
Q. Why are the stuctures closed/open between the lakes?
A. The lakes can be lowered by opening gates and letting water back into the river. Or, they can be raised by letting water in through the Leslie Hefner Canal if the river is higher than the lakes. Water levels are lowered before the wet season to prevent flooding. Each lake has set minimums and maximums for different times of year. This information is available on the SWFWMD website, or you can call 1-800-423-1476 extension 4515 and talk to the people in charge of structures. |
Q. Why dont they drop/raise the Wysong dam?
A. There is a criteria set by the Army Corps of Engineers for the raising and lowering of the dam (which is an inflatable structure). The dam must be dropped if the water reaches 39.5 ft above sea level. More information is available from SWFWMD. |
