About TOOFAR
Mission Statement:   TOOFAR, Inc. is a grassroots organization dedicated to the best management and conservation of natural resources for present and future generations through public education and interaction with all entities charged with those responsibilities.
Objectives:

  1. Promote the long-term raising and maintaining of surface water levels with full understanding of the ecological need for natural occurring low-levels in lakes and rivers.
  2. Work toward assuring conservative water uses that effects all users, public and private.
  3. Insure future quality of drinking water supplies through pollution prevention and pumping limits.
  4. Actively pursue surface water conservation for enhanced recharge whether by structure or other water conserving systems.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF OUR WATER – SURFACE AND AQUIFER

  1. Promote use and research of biological weed control for exotics only.
  2. Promote public education of the necessity for Florida native aquatic plants, and the need for phasing out of chemical usage to reduce present silting disasters to lakes and rivers.
  3. Establishing of effective methods and speedy procedures for managing emergency sink-hole occurrences.
  4. Educate the public that sink-holes are a Florida anomaly and cannot be totally prevented nor is it desirable in many cases.

SECURE ACCOUNTABLE REPRESENTATION FROM SWFWMD

  1. All districts must be fully accountable to the public: not special areas or interests.
  2. Maintain pressures to force a sense of immediacy into the securing of vote control by every means. Seek help from all elected representatives to achieve this goal.
  3. Give credit where credit is due, but sternly confront every incidence that denies public accountability.

BETTER ACCESS TO PUBLIC OWNED LANDS AND WATERWAYS

  1. Open inspections of all land parcels when requested by TOOFAR or other incorporated civic groups.
  2. Improve recreational use of all public owned lands and waterways.
  3. Preserve, protect and enhance the eco-system of our land.
  4. Repeal all water district’s powers to sell at will any public lands administered by them.
  5. Support needed and on-going lake restoration programs.

LOCAL SOURCES FIRST (view additional information)

  1. Keep committee monitors on all leads pointing to inter-regional transfer planning.
  2. Continue to educate the public on effects of water transfers.
  3. Actively pursue other allies outside our immediate area.
  4. Support desalination to eliminate the need for water transfer schemes.

USE ALL LEGAL AVENUES TO ACCOMPLISH ALL PRIORITIES

  1. Pursue Basin Board and Governing Board workshops to make presentations of fact.
  2. Appeal to local authorities, Governor and Cabinet.
  3. As last resort, determine litigation avenues.

Future Vision:

The direction of TOOFAR has been given a great deal of thought by the Board of Directors and has led the organization to pursue the creation of a separate TOOFAR Foundation with 501c3 status.

The organization envisions the two organizations pursuing different aspects of our mission with the Foundation taking over the educational and fund raising activities relating to special projects such as the development of an environmental education center and a Fishing for Success program, while the grassroots organization continues its political and awareness campaigns to save Florida waterways. This vision takes the organization to a state wide presence with powerful influence on government and agency policy.
